Understanding Anxiety & How to Overcome It | Anxiety No More

Struggling with anxiety can feel overwhelming, confusing, and at times impossible to escape from. You may be dealing with constant worry, physical symptoms, or a mind that never seems to switch off. This site is here to help you understand what is happening, why you feel the way you do, and how you can begin to move towards recovery in a clear and practical way.

My name is Paul, and I personally experienced anxiety and panic disorder for over 10 years before fully recovering. Everything shared on this site comes from that experience and the understanding I gained along the way. Whether you are experiencing mild anxiety or more severe symptoms, the goal here is to provide clear, simple, and useful guidance to support your recovery.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural human response, but for some people it can become persistent and overwhelming, affecting thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. It may show up as constant worry, physical tension, racing thoughts, or sudden feelings of panic. Over time, it can begin to interfere with daily life, relationships, work, and overall well-being.

While anxiety can feel serious and all-consuming, it is important to understand that it is a very common experience and something that can be understood and worked through.

Common causes of anxiety

  • Prolonged stress (job loss, financial pressure, bereavement, major life changes)
  • Perfectionism or low self-esteem
  • Drug or alcohol use as a way of coping with life’s stressors
  • Past trauma, abuse or bullying
  • Health-related worries
  • Growing up in an environment where you felt unsafe
  • Lack of rest and pushing yourself beyond your limits

While these are common contributing factors, everyone’s experience is different.

In my own case, anxiety became a signal that something in my life needed attention and change. Understanding this was an important step in my recovery.

Common signs and symptoms of anxiety

Anxiety can affect both the mind and body. Symptoms vary from person to person, but common experiences include:

Physical Symptoms:

  • Muscle tension
  • Heart palpitations
  • Mental and physical exhaustion

  • A tight or heavy feeling in the head

Mental and Emotional Symptoms:

Behavioural Symptoms:

  • A desire to isolate yourself
  • Finding it hard to relax or switch off

  • Rushing through interactions to get them over with
  • Overeating or turning to alcohol to cope
  • Trying to think your way out of how you feel in the hope of finding a solution

A Personal Note

Looking back, anxiety was one of the most difficult periods of my life, but it also led to a deeper understanding of myself and how I was living.

I now see it not as something that needed to be feared, but as something that pointed me towards change.

Recovery didn’t come from trying to fight every symptom, but from understanding the condition and changing how I responded to it over time.

Further Help

I have also written a book on the subject, At Last a Life, where I go into much more detail about my experience and recovery.

The book has now been published in three different languages and has sold over 200,000 copies.

It has helped many people over the years and continues to receive positive feedback from readers, as well as recommendations from doctors and therapists. You can read testimonials from people in the public eye on my testimonials page or see the fabulous feedback on Amazon.
